Security Upgrades – Southern Cross
City of Melbourne's security upgrade works around
Southern Cross Station are continuing. Steel bollards
have already been installed at the intersection of
Spencer and Bourke streets.

The next phase of works will include installation
of security measures at the intersection of Collins
and Spencer streets as well as between Collins and
Bourke streets.

These measures are part of a program of security
enhancements being delivered by City of Melbourne
in partnership with the Victorian Government and
Victoria Police.
The upgrades around Southern Cross Station are being developed by security experts and designers to provide a high level of safety, while preserving the character of the area and balancing the needs of all users.

How will this initiative benefit you?
These upgraded measures are important as protective security is strengthened around Southern Cross Station. The measures will provide protection for commuters, visitors, pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and customers of nearby businesses.

When will the works take place?
Security upgrades are continuing at several locations around Southern Cross Station. Works commenced on Monday 28 September and will run for approximately 10 weeks.

Whenever possible, works are being scheduled to minimise disruption. Ongoing works at Southern Cross Station Additional security measures will be installed at the station entrance on Collins Street later this year. As we face constantly changing circumstances related to COVID-19, the City of Melbourne is continuing to monitor and adhere to protective health requirements. These works are permitted by the Victorian Government and contractors have a High Risk CovidSafe Plan to operate safely. At the moment, there is no impact on the delivery of these works. Wherever possible, works are being scheduled to minimise disruption. Security upgrades will also be installed on Collins Street, outside Southern Cross Station, in the coming months.

How will these works impact me?
The majority of works will take place between 7am and 5pm between Monday and Friday. Some work at night time and weekends will also be required. Impacts will include:
• Temporary closures of pedestrian crossings.
• Partial road closures on Collins and Spencer streets.
• Reduced taxi rank capacity outside the station.
• Work areas will be fenced off and signs will direct pedestrians, cyclists and motorists to move safely
